The narrative of Joseph, Mary, and Jesus fleeing to Egypt and their eventual return, as recorded in Matthew 2:19-23, is a crucial yet often understated part of the broader Christmas story. We explore it here in the eleventh episode (out of 12) of our series “The Complete Christmas Story.”  While the nativity and the visit of the Magi are celebrated, the return from Egypt reveals God's ongoing protection and guidance for the Holy Family, fulfilling prophecy and offering enduring lessons for Christians today.

The Biblical Account

According to the Gospel of Matthew, after the Magi's visit, Joseph is warned in a dream to flee with Mary and Jesus to Egypt to escape King Herod's murderous plans. The family remains in Egypt until Herod's death. After Herod died, God appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him that his family could return to their homeland. But because Archelaus, Herod's son, was ruling in Judea, the dream warned Joseph that the area around Jerusalem (including Bethlehem) might not be safe. So, the family went north to Galilee and settled in Nazareth. This fulfills what the prophets said: "He shall be called a Nazarene." Matthew tells us nothing else about Jesus' life until he begins his public ministry as an adult.

The Importance to the Complete Christmas Story

The return from Egypt is not simply an epilogue to the nativity events; it is integral to the Christmas narrative for several reasons:

Arriving in Nazareth

Fulfillment of Prophecy: The journey to and from Egypt fulfills Old Testament prophecies, notably Hosea 11:1—"Out of Egypt I called my son." The narrative positions Jesus as the true Israel, the one who relives and redeems Israel's history.

God's Sovereign Protection: The passage highlights God's active role in safeguarding God’s Son through angelic guidance. The divine instructions to Joseph underscore the importance of obedience and trust in God's plan.

Preparation for Ministry: Settling in Nazareth sets the stage for Jesus' upbringing and future ministry. The title "Nazarene" becomes a mark of humility and fulfills the messianic expectations.

Significance for Christians Today

The return from Egypt holds profound meaning for contemporary believers:

God's Guidance in Uncertainty: Just as God guided Joseph through dreams during times of danger and uncertainty, Christians are reminded that God continues to lead God’s people through life's challenges.

Obedience and Trust: Joseph's immediate and faithful response to God's instructions serves as a model of obedience. Christians are encouraged to listen for God's direction and follow, even when the path is unclear or difficult.

Jesus' Identification with Humanity: By experiencing exile and return, Jesus shares in humanity's hardships and vulnerabilities. This aspect of His life story affirms His role as Emmanuel—God with us—in every circumstance.

Hope and New Beginnings: The relocation to Nazareth signifies new beginnings and the fulfillment of God's promises, offering hope to all who face displacement or uncertainty.

Conclusión

The return from Egypt by Joseph, Mary, and Jesus is a pivotal episode that enriches the Christmas story and deepens its meaning. It is a testament to God's faithfulness, the fulfillment of prophecy, and the ongoing relevance of Christ's early life for Christians today. This event encourages believers to trust in God's guidance, embrace obedience, and find hope in His unwavering care, no matter where life's journey may lead.
